Carved in Stone
Monuments, markers, and memorials of all sorts are tucked into hidden corners of Jefferson Co. and rarely remembered. This page is our attempt to give them some attention. Let us know your favorite and we’ll get it on our list. Email jeffcohistory@gmail.com to tell us about monuments we’re missing. (We have a few more to add, so stop back!)
What is a Monument? There are probably many different ways to define this. For our purposes here, we plan to include those that consist of a stone structure accompanied by a plaque, usually of metal. Monuments generally commemorate people and events from our history. There will be exceptions along the way, no doubt…
Please note: For practical reasons, our list includes isolated markers, and rules out gravestones and other markers that are within cemeteries. See the Colorado Tombstone Photo Project or Jeffco Genealogy Website for that information.
For another look at markers, visit waymarking.com, which covers all kinds of markers in Colorado or any other state you’d like to check. Michael and Sandra, two of the good folks working on Colorado’s pages, were the first to identify our Mystery Monument, and have a page dedicated to it at First Gold Strike. The Waymarking website is the place to go if you’d like to use your GPS unit to find these and other historic markers.
